    Animals of the Adirondacks

Vocabulary

Understanding these terms may prepare your students for their lesson.

 

Adaptation- Things that make an animal particularly suited to a habitat; ex. sharp claws

Bird- Warm blooded animal that lays eggs and has feathers, backbone, and hollow bones

Carnivore- A meat-eating animal

Diurnal- Active during the day

Habitat- The environment in which an animal lives and finds food, water and shelter

Herbivore- A plant-eating animal

Mammal- animal that has fur, gives birth to live young, and feeds its young milk

Nocturnal- Active at night

Omnivore- An animal that eats both plants and meat

Predator- Animal that hunts other animals in order to live

Prey- Animal hunted by predators
